Japanese cosmetics are less about a new miracle every season and more about the same gestures, done well: oil or foam off the day, water back in, a cream only where the skin asks. Drugstores in Japan sell this idea at every price. We keep that method and a short list.

Matsumoto Cosmetics is not a department-store counter and not a clinic brand. We make four bottles that work together. You can stop at two. You can add sunscreen and call it a day. The site is matsumotocosmetics.online.

Why it feels different

What “Japanese skincare” actually means

Lotion is not toner

In Japan, keshō-sui (lotion) is a watery layer you press in with hands. It hydrates. It is not an astringent splash to “close pores”. If a bottle stings, it is the wrong bottle.

Barrier first

Humid summers and heated winters taught the same lesson: do not strip the face in the evening and then spend the next morning repairing it. Foam should rinse clean. Cream should be thin.

Suhada, not glass

The look people want is even, a little dewy, still a face. Highlight and poreless makeup sit on top of that. We formulate for the skin under the makeup, not for a camera.

Four seasons on one face

Spring Pollen and wind. Keep the cleanser mild. Lotion in the morning even if you skip cream.
Summer Humidity does half the work. A lotion and sunscreen may be enough. Cream only at night if you still feel tight.
Autumn Heaters start. Bring the camellia cream back onto cheeks and the sides of the nose.
Winter Indoor air is the enemy. Lotion on damp skin, then cream. Do not stack five serums instead of water.

The habit

Morning

Rinse with lukewarm water. Foam only if the skin is oily or you wore SPF to bed by accident.
Two pumps of green tea lotion, pressed in. Jaw, cheeks, forehead, neck.
A rice-grain of camellia cream on dry patches — not a mask of product.
Day screen on face and the V of the neck. That is the commute done.

Night

Rice foam cleanser, 20 seconds, rinse until the face does not feel soapy.
Lotion while the skin is still slightly damp. This is the step people skip and then blame the cream.
Camellia cream on cheeks, mouth corners, and any tightness. Wait a minute before the pillow.
If you wear heavy makeup, wipe it first with a plain oil or a cloth. We do not sell a second cleanser. Any mild oil is fine.

Rice foam cleanser 米ぬか洗顔

A fine foam from rice bran and glycerin. It takes off sunscreen and the day. It should not leave the cheeks squeaky. Use at night; mornings are optional.

Green tea lotion 緑茶化粧水

Watery, no film. Green tea and hyaluronic acid. This is the Japanese “lotion”: you press it in with two hands until the shine settles. Cotton pads waste product; use them only if you prefer the feel.

Camellia cream 椿クリーム

Tsubaki (camellia) seed oil in a thin cream. It spreads, then disappears. For winter cheeks, around the nose, and the dry map that shows up after a flight.

Day screen 日やけ止め

A light SPF for face and neck. Made to sit under makeup or alone. White cast should be brief. Reapply if you sit outside longer than a walk to the station.

In the bottle

Ingredients you will actually find on the label

Rice bran · 米ぬか: Used in Japanese soaps and bath culture for a long time. Softens the cleanse so you do not need a harsh surfactant to feel “done”.
Green tea · 緑茶: A light plant extract in a watery lotion. It is not a drug. It belongs in formulas that stay close to water.
Camellia · 椿: Oil from the tsubaki seed, common in hair and face care in Japan. Spreads thinner than olive. Good where the skin cracks, not as a cooking-oil mask.
Hyaluronic acid: Holds water on the surface. Works when the skin is still damp from lotion. On a dry face in a dry room it does less than people hope.
Glycerin: The unglamorous hydrator in almost every decent Japanese lotion. If the bottle feels comfortable, glycerin is often why.
Fragrance: Ours stays low. A hint of tea or clean soap, not a department-store cloud. If you need fragrance-free, say so in the mail — we will tell you which SKU is the quietest.

Questions

Before you write

Can I use only one product?

Yes. The lotion alone is a complete morning for many people in summer. The cream alone helps winter hands and cheeks. The four together are a set, not a rule.

Is this “natural” or organic?

No stamp-chasing. We use plant oils and also ordinary cosmetic hydrators like glycerin and hyaluronic acid because they work. The INCI is on the pack.

Will it clog pores?

The lotion is water-light. The cream is a thin layer — if you use a knob of it, that is user error, not a pore conspiracy. If you are extremely acne-prone, start with cleanser and lotion only.

Can I put it on the body?

The cream is fine on hands and dry shins. The day screen is for face and neck. Do not use the foam as a body wash; it is sized for a face.

Shipping and storing

Keep bottles out of a hot car and out of the sun on a windowsill. Close the cap. Lotion likes a cool cupboard. We answer stock and postage questions at the mail below — this page is the shop window, not a live cart.
